Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father passed away in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be an attendant or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She went to school in the area. But she quit school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs were offered to her. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. There she earned a living working as an usherette during the in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
